The Sovis Clan Readies For the Lowell 50

After politely skipping the cyclocross last weekend, Cody, Joe and Wes Sovis will take the start in beautiful Lowell, Michigan for the Lowell 50. The race this Saturday marks the inaugural edition of the gravel road race, similar to the Barry-Roubaix that kicks off the cycling season.

Joe Sovis will end his season Saturday and is hoping to conclude his 2011 campaign on yet another high note. After an impressive top ten at Peak2Peak, Joe is coming into Lowell on some of the best form he’s ever had, and will be on comfortable terrain. The rolling hills, wind and flat sections all suite his style of riding very well. He will take part in the 27 mile race, lining up in one of the larger groups of the race, and one of the most competitive. “I’m pretty excited. I hope it’s warm,” Joe said last Monday. Since Tuesday was his birthday, he was unable to be reached for comment, and will not take part in the press conference scheduled for Friday night.

Cody and Wes will be competing in the 18-29 category of the 50 mile race. While it is a tune-up race for next week’s Iceman Cometh in Traverse City, the Sovis Bros. are treating Lowell as a big opportunity. Wes has been riding on especially good form, and Cody has steadily been improving since his concussion at Pando. While everyone will have their eyes on Wes, Cody will be looking to catch them all marking the wrong wheel. Though he admits Wes will probably spend most of the race as the team’s protected rider, Cody did say he would try his own hand. “Wes has definitely been more consistent this year, but we are going into this race as a two-pronged Schle-ttack. That’s a Schleck-like attack. I made that up a second ago.”

The Lowell 50 starts at 9 am this Saturday, October 29th. Look for a race report and photo gallery sometime Saturday evening.
